Elliot Pageand Emma Portner announced on Tuesdaythat they’ve splitafter 3 years of marriage, but the pair have been estranged for months.
In a joint statement shared with PEOPLE afterTMZreported that Page had filed for divorce in a Manhattan court, the former couple shared, “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer. We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
The split comes over 3 years after the two announced their surprise marriage just after New Year’s in 2018.
Page, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2007 hitJuno, came out as a transgender man in a heartfelt statement two months ago.

“I am so proud of@elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much,” Portner wrote alongside Page’s statement.
In his statement, Page first introduced his new name before thanking the trans community for inspiring him to come out.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” he wrote. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”
Page wrote he was feeling “overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.”
