Prepare for showers!
TheLyrids meteor shower, which first went active on April 15, is slated to reach its peak in the night sky later this month.
The annual event, which usually occurs during late April, is said to be one of the oldest known meteor showers, with the first recorded sighting dating back to 687 BC,per NASA.
According to NASA, Lyrids are known for their “fast and bright meteors” and can include as many as 100 meteors per hour. Though, on most occasions, only 10 to 20 Lyrid meteors can be seen per hour during their peak.

When is the Lyrids meteor shower in 2023?
The Lyrids meteor shower first went active on April 15 and will remain active until April 29. The meteor shower will reach its peak on April 21 and last until the next day,per NASA.American Meteor Societysuggests the best time to witness the Lyrids will be around 9 p.m. ET on April 22.
Where can I see the Lyrids meteor shower in 2023?
Per NASA, the Lyrids are “best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere during the dark hours.” NASA adds that the Lyrids' radiant point, aka “the point in the sky from which the Lyrids appear to come,” is near the constellation Lyra and the Lyrids appear to radiate near Vega, which just so happens to be the brightest star in the constellation.
However, it’s best to view Lyrids away from their radiant as they will “appear longer and more spectacular from this perspective,” per NASA.
