Today is the last day of New York Fashion Week (that noise you just heard was every person in the industry breathing a collective sigh of relief). And if you’re a NYFW regular you know that the last day can mean only one thing — the Marc Jacobs runway is finally upon us. But while everyone typically leaves this final fashion show buzzing about the latest breathtaking styles they just witnessed, we have a feeling everyone won’t be able to stop talking about the hairstyles created for the models this year.

Jena’s passion for faux-dreadlocks originated 10 years ago, when she used an online tutorial to feed her enthusiasm for colorful hair. Each girl wore roughly 55 strands twisted and knotted into their natural hair and every do took about an hour and a half to complete. Understandably, when Marc and Guido first reached out to Jena, they were worried about her ability to deliver on time, but, Palau says, “she stepped up to it, it was great.”

So what did inspire him? Well, Wachowski, of course, plus Boy George, raver culture and the internet. “What’s fun for me about it is to do something that’s so fun to look at — when you see it with the clothes, they become very, very tall. They almost look like they’ve stepped out of a computer. They look like illustrations at some point, when you see them dressed. And those Harajuku girls, I love the way they are so extreme and it’s such a total look and they do it so well.”
Nars Creative Director François Narscreated six different looks to compliment the colorful clothes and hair.
“The look is all about the hair and the makeup really complements that. We matched the color of the eye makeup to the hair and clothes and created six different eye looks using pastel colors,” he shared. “Lashes were applied to help define the eye, the face was kept clean with little makeup and the brows were brushed up and natural. The look is very ’80s English Rave — Boy George, Marilyn Manson, Club Kids, all people who are not scared to push boundaries.”
But one more question still remains, now that all the hype and fanfare of fashion week is finally beginning to die down, what is Jena planning to do with those 12K custom dyed locs?
