EX-NFL Wide Receiver Mike Williams Died From Rare Bacterial Sepsis After Construction Site Accident

Former NFL wide receiverMike Williams’ cause of death has been revealed.Williams, 36, died in September following an accident at a construction site that left him partially paralyzed and on a ventilator. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer had been hospitalized in an intensive care unit in Tampa Bay, Fla., following the Aug. 21 construction site accident.ESPNreportedThursday that Williams died from a rare bacterial sepsis, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office in Florida.

The medical examiner’s office said in its report that Williams’ cause of death was from “bacterial sepsis with cerebral abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple dental caries and retained dental roots," according to the outlet.

Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular was also listed as a contributing factor to the former NFL player’s death, ESPN reported.

Williams went on to play five full seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2016 with the Kansas City Chiefs. He scored 26 touchdowns and caught 3,089 receiving yards throughout his career.

Williams' agent, Hadley Engelhard, told NFL Network’sIan Rappaportthat Williams “will be missed.”“He fought hard his whole life,” Engelhard said. “Prayers to his family.”Williams shared 8-year-old daughter Mya with Tierney Lyle, who originally confirmed the former NFL star’s death to theTampa Bay Timesin September.

Williams’ father Wendell Muhammad had been providing updates about his son on GoFundMe since his August accident.His father said Williams “recently had a major accident at work” when “a steel beam fell on his head causing a massive head injury,” according to one post.“As a result of this accident, there was swelling on his brain and swelling on his spinal cord that was ruptured,” Williams’ father said. “These injuries resulted in complete paralysis in his right arm as well as his lower body from the waist down.”
