Santos wasexpelled from the U.S. House of Representativesin December in an exceedingly rare move reserved for serious misconduct.

Through a 311-114vote at the time, the first-term Republican becameonly the sixth of more than 11,000 U.S. representativesin history to be ousted from Congress' lower chamber.

On Tuesday, Suozzi — a former congressman who previously represented Santos' district — won the high-profile special election to reclaim his old seat, which is made up of parts of Long Island and Queens.

“Let’s just say the quiet part out loud. Donald Trump continues to be a huge weight against Republican candidates,” said former South Carolina Gov.Nikki Haley, who’s running against Trump in the GOP presidential primaries, perABC News. “Despite the enormous and obvious failings of Joe Biden, we just lost another winnable Republican House seat because voters overwhelmingly reject Donald Trump.”

U.S. representative George Santos is mobbed by media as Trump Supporters and protesters begin to arrive outside of New York Criminal Court at 100 Centre Street awaiting the arrival and the arraignment of Former President Donald Trump after a grand jury indictment in New York City on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

While Democrats have celebrated the victory, Santos has slammed members of his own party for backing an expulsion that lost the House GOP a much-needed seat.

Santos' fellow New York Republicans helped lead the charge to expel him from Congress following a sprawling federal indictment accusing the freshman lawmaker of theft and fraud involving his congressional campaign. (Hepleaded not guiltyto each of the criminal charges and has not yet gone to trial.)

Since the special election results were finalized, Santos has repeatedly expressed his frustrations on X, writing: “Good morning to everyone except for the full of Bologna congressional delegation from Long Island!” and “The @NassauNYGOP chairman needs to resign today!”

In one post, he simply wrote, “-1.”

Santos — who wasmired in controversyeven before his swearing-in — entered the national spotlight on a rocky note, as story after story cropped up about himlying about his past, allegations ofrunning fraudulent schemesaccumulated, and a prospective staffer accused him ofmaking unwanted sexual advances.

Santos was hit with a23-count federal indictmentearlier this year thattells a similar narrative, featuring a variety of theft and fraud charges involving his congressional campaign.

The House Ethics Committee — which spent several months investigating Santos but does not have the power to lay criminal charges — delivered the final blow to the congressman’s career, explaining that the investigatory subcommittee “unanimously concluded that there was substantial evidence” of him engaging in fraud.
